The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is an international Catholic organization of laypersons founded by Frederic Ozanam in 1833. Inspired by Gospel values, its primary mission is to engage in person-to-person service to those in need regardless of religious denomination. Vincentians seek personal holiness through works of charity. SVdP volunteers at Church of The Ascension distribute donations from our church collections, as well as items to those in our area. Please note that we have a donation box in the vestibule of the church for any donations outside of our monthly second collections.
Below is a summary of some of the ways in which we help those in need:
- Rent assistance (includes temporary housing, mortgage, rent, and taxes)
- Medical needs (includes emergency relief funds)
- Utilities (gas, electric, water, propane)
- Auto payments
- Calls to people
Programs:
- Home Visitations/Assistance – the cornerstone of our conference focuses on connecting with those in need in our community to offer assistance. Noted above.
- St. Vincent de Paul Haven (Men’s Shelter in Newark) – a meal preparation program where Church of the Ascension volunteers make meals for the Haven on Sunday nights. Click here to sign up.
- Panera Bread Pickup – volunteers pick up donated baked goods from the Panera in New Albany and bring the donation to the Haven in Newark on Saturdays and to the Church on Sundays for the food bank in Johnstown. Click here to sign up.
Meetings are the 1st Monday of each month, 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the church
